Reliant on dreams, dreams of the future, the perfect body or travel and adventure.Trying to persuade that if you buy something you will be ‘richer’, selling glamour.Images are everywhere now, walls, magazines.Publicity images reflect paintings and may use similar images but in a different context. Some, the greatest, also show the mystery of light and time, the sense of existence.Recorded the lives and social status of the rich, silks and satins, livestock, belongings.Paintings appear tangible, show treasures and have become treasures in their own right.Oil painting is traditionally associated with wealth and ownership. In the European tradition, how much has classical painting effected how a woman sees herself? You should be beautiful, and, if not, you are worthless, must do something about it.Women are for the pleasure of the owner, only very few show the women as her own person Women have been historically valued for their worth to somebody else, usually male.Art description may confuse rather than clarify. There is a further impact from the possibility of only being shown part of the image, possibly with additional words or music. There is a clear difference between the way that images were originally viewed, in a particular place, where you had to go to them, from how they are often seen now in reproduction, in a magazine, in your own house.Be aware of the still and striking experience of original art in its own place. Here I have summarised the points I gained from the videos and the associated essays.

Unfortunately, the accessible penguin issue has poor and monochrome reproductions that make following these difficult. In the book the four original chapters are interspersed with essays composed solely of images.
#JOHN BERGER WAYS OF SEEING CHAPTER FIVE SERIES#
That's because it's almost impossible to disagree with something that's directly in front of you, so plain and obvious, even though if you searched you could find problems with what you"re seeing.Ways of Seeing was originally a TV series in the 1970’s by John Berger, which was then followed and expanded on by a book of the same name. As soon as I saw this real life demonstration of physics I could believe the theory because even our deepest-rooted beliefs can be changed by sight. We got some high-powered slingshots and squash balls and shot the balls horizontally off of a balcony while dropping some at the same time, and without fail they hit the ground at the same time. I tried to picture a bullet being fired from a gun and hitting the ground but I couldn't do it, and so as a class we decided to test out this theory. Theoretically this made perfect sense, gravity is the same on both bullets as is air resistance, but I just could not believe it would happen that way. We were examining the laws of gravity and motion when someone made the conjecture that if a bullet was shot horizontally out of a gun and another was dropped from the same height at the same time the two bullets would land at exactly the same time. One of the examples of seeing is believing that helped me understand my parents occurred during a recent physics class. But as soon as I could see examples of what they were saying in the world around me I understood it perfectly, in this case, seeing was believing. In this instance I could not for the life of me believe what my parents were telling me, it just didn't make any sense. Although this may be a simplistic example of what my parents were telling me just a few years ago it also illustrates the idea of seeing is believing very clearly. A common saying my parents kept repeating to me while I was very young was "seeing is believing, you"ll understand when you"re older." But to tell you the truth I never really believed them, that is until I was a little older and through my experiences could see what they meant first hand.
